Blackwell is delighted that Cantor Helen Leneman has kindly agreed to share her expertise on music with authors of the series.

Dr. Leneman received her PhD in 2004 at the University of Amsterdam under Prof. Athalya Brenner. The title of her thesis is 'The Scroll of Ruth Re-told through Librettos and Music: Biblical Interpretation in a New Key.' She has written and lectured extensively in Europe and in the U.S. on musical interpretations of Ruth and other biblical women’s narratives. Her book The Performed Bible: The Story of Ruth in Opera and Oratorio (Sheffield Phoenix Press) is forthcoming in 2007. Dr. Leneman has worked for many years as a professional pianist and singer. In addition to her professional training as a cantor at Hebrew Union College, she also worked as an opera chorister for many years in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Dr. Leneman is fluent in several languages and currently lives in Rome.
